AUSTIN — A Chicago firefighter died Wednesday from accidents he suffered battling a morning blaze on the West Facet.
Captain David Meyer had been with the Fireplace Division since 1996, division spokesman Larry Langford wrote on Twitter. He’s survived by his spouse, daughters and a son.
About 4 a.m., firefighters have been known as to a fireplace in a storage within the 1200 block of North Pine Avenue, spokesman Larry Merritt mentioned.
Meyer was critically injured when the storage roof collapsed on him, in keeping with the Solar-Occasions.
Meyer was hospitalized in vital situation earlier than being pronounced useless, officers mentioned.
The hearth was put out inside quarter-hour and solely required a low-level response, Merritt mentioned. The reason for the fireplace was unknown.
Chicago firefighters gathered exterior Stroger Hospital’s emergency room Wednesday as they awaited Meyer’s procession from the hospital. Meyer’s household was seen being escorted from the hospital by fireplace division officers. Mayor Brandon Johnson joined the meeting.
